The UK Industrial Strategy addresses long-term challenges to the UK economy and aims to improve living standards and economic growth by increasing productivity and driving growth across the whole country. Science and Innovation form a central part of UK Industrial Strategy.
Innovate UK, the national innovation agency that centralises most of R&D funding in UK develops bi-annually an Innovation Delivery Plan that outlines how the agency will invest its budget to find, support and grow innovative businesses.
The core budget for 2016/17 is £561m and offers funding grants to companies to de-risk, enable and support innovation. The budget is split into 4 thematic priorities in research and innovation based on the UK Industrial Strategy goals:
- Emerging and Enabling Technologies
- Health and Life Sciences
- Infrastructure Systems
- Manufacturing and Materials
Funding programmes are established around these four focus areas, open to all interested entities to apply for funding, from large multinational companies, Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME’s), and research organisations and universities located in the United Kingdom.
