The challenge

A county in the Midwest needed to redesign a dangerous intersection along U.S. Route 40, a $4.8 million project well beyond what the county's own budget could afford.

Our approach

We worked with the county to build a $3.84 million Congressionally Directed Spending request and accompanying advocacy strategy, positioning the project under the Transportation-HUD bill through USDOT's Highway Infrastructure Programs. We secured sponsorship from both of the county's U.S. Senators and the local House member, coordinating letters of support from local officials along the way.

The outcome

The project was fully funded at the requested $3.84 million, covering 80% of total project cost. The award lets the county move forward on an intersection safety project that had been on its capital improvement plan unfunded for years, delivering a direct benefit to local drivers and residents.
